Computing and Technology

At Old Windebrowe School, Computing and Technology plays an important role in supporting pupils to access learning, communicate effectively, and develop skills for everyday life. Our curriculum is carefully adapted to ensure that all learners, across all pathways, can engage with technology in meaningful, safe, and purposeful ways.

Computing is taught through practical, hands‑on experiences and is closely linked to pupils’ interests, real‑life skills, and preparation for adulthood.

What We Teach
Our Computing and Technology curriculum supports pupils to:

  • Develop basic computing skills, such as using devices, keyboards, touchscreens, and assistive technology.
  • Build digital literacy through age‑appropriate use of software, apps, and online tools.
  • Explore early coding and problem‑solving using simple, visual, and sensory‑based programmes where appropriate.
  • Use technology to support communication, creativity, and independence.
  • Understand how technology is used in everyday life and in the wider community.

Learning is personalised to meet individual needs and may include the use of specialist or assistive technology to support access and engagement.

Online Safety.
Online safety is a key part of our Computing and Technology curriculum. Pupils are taught, in an age‑appropriate and accessible way, how to:

  • Stay safe when using digital devices and the internet.
  • Recognise trusted adults and services.
  • Understand basic rules around privacy, consent, and responsible use of technology.

This learning supports pupils to develop confidence and awareness as digital citizens.

Technology for Learning and Life.
Across the school, technology is used to enhance learning and support independence. Pupils use technology to:

  • Access the curriculum across a range of subjects.
  • Communicate needs, choices, and ideas.
  • Develop skills that prepare them for life beyond school, including work and community settings.

Our approach ensures that technology is not just a subject, but a tool that empowers pupils and supports success across all areas of learning.
