Personal Development

At Old Windebrowe School, Personal Development is central to everything we do. Through a carefully planned and highly personalised curriculum, we support pupils to develop the skills, knowledge, and attitudes they need to lead happy, healthy, and fulfilling lives.

Our Personal Development curriculum brings together PSHE, Relationships and Sex Education (RSE), British Values, SMSC, Citizenship, and Preparation for Adulthood, and is adapted to meet the needs of all learners across our pathways.

What We Teach
Through meaningful, real‑life learning experiences, pupils are supported to:

  • Understand themselves and others.
  • Build positive relationships.
  • Develop emotional awareness, resilience, and confidence.
  • Learn how to stay safe, healthy, and well.
  • Explore rights, responsibilities, and the role they play in their community.

Learning is delivered in an inclusive and age‑appropriate way and is closely linked to pupils’ daily experiences, ensuring it is relevant, accessible, and purposeful.

British Values and Citizenship.
British Values are embedded throughout our Personal Development curriculum. Pupils learn about:

  • Democracy.
  • The rule of law.
  • Individual liberty.
  • Mutual respect and tolerance.

Citizenship learning helps pupils understand community life, fairness, rules, and how to participate positively in society, both within school and beyond.

Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural (SMSC) Development.
Our curriculum actively promotes pupils’ spiritual, moral, social, and cultural development. Learners are encouraged to reflect, make choices, recognise right and wrong, respect differences, and celebrate diversity, fostering a strong sense of belonging and self‑worth.

Preparation for Adulthood.
Preparation for adulthood is a key focus across all pathways. Pupils are supported to develop:

  • Independence and life skills.
  • Communication and self‑advocacy.
  • Community participation.
  • Decision‑making and problem‑solving skills.

This learning helps pupils move towards greater independence and prepares them for life beyond school, enabling them to achieve the best possible outcomes.

Personal Development at Old Windebrowe empowers our pupils to understand the world around them, build positive relationships, and develop the confidence and skills needed for future life.
